Day 1
Arrival at ABRA PAMPA (link) (km 200 of Route 9). From there, we will take Route 71 with destination COCHINOCA (link), where Eduarda Cruz, our host, will be waiting for us with an typical lunch. Her son, Juan Raon Cabezas, will guide us through the little town and show us the church, the cemetery, and its ancient adobe constructions.
After lunch, we will visit the Peñas de Ascalte, some impressive volcanic formations with rocks that have shapes of animals. Once we finish this tour, we will take Route 71 and pass through Casa Colorada, Cincel, the mine of Pan de Azúcar and Fundiciones. There, we will take Route 70 and pass by the mine of Santo Domingo until we reach LIVIARA. After a short snack at Liviara, we will take the legendary Route 40 to start our trip to our final destination of the day: CUSI CUSI. We will have dinner and spend the night at the guest house RINCON DE CUSI.
Day 2
During the morning, we will go trekking for about 90 minutes through the magnificent VALLE DE LA LUNA or VALLE DE MARTE with Candido, our local guide. We will descend through the valley and walk through it. Once we finish the tour, we will have lunch at the guest house.
In the evening, we will go to LAGUNILLAS DE FARALLON, a little town that is an obligatory step to get to the Laguna de Vilama. We will go all over the town and visit the textile handicrafts. We will have dinner and spend the night at guest house RINCON DE CUSI.
Day 3
After having breakfast, we will go trekking to the old town of CUSI with our guide José León Coria, who will tell us the story of the ancient town and take us to visit the centenarian church. Then, we will have lunch at the guesthouse and start our trip to SANTA CATALINA.
We will take Route 40 and pass by CIENAGA, a town that borders Bolivia. As a stretch of Route 40 is cut, we will have to continue our trip through the legendary QUEBRADA DE OROS, which means to travel 13km through the river bed and then end up on Route 40 at SAN JUAN DE OROS. We will make several stops to take pictures of this beautiful Route. We will pass through Timón Cruz, Misa Rumi, Hornillos, and then take Route 5 with final destination SANTA CATALINA. Dinner and night at guest house DON CLEMENTE.
Day 4
This morning will be free of activities so that you can walk along the town and enjoy the landscape. After lunch, we will go to the incredible town EL ANGOSTO, which is divided from Bolivia only by the river Grande de San Juan. On our way there, we will stop by EL QUEÑOAL, a place full of trees named Queñoa (a millenial tree with red bark). Then, we will arrive at the FILO DEL ANGOSTO, the most incredible viewpoint of La Puna, where we will observe the tripartite border of Chile, Bolivia and Argentina. Once in the town (located 500mt from El Filo), we will walk along the streets, and visit a local school and greenhouse. Dinner and night at guest house DON CLEMENTE.
Day 5
In the morning we will start our return with destination LA QUIACA. We will take Route 76 and pass through el mirador del Morrito, a little hump of rocks that was used as a defense from possible attacks from other tribes. Then, we will pass through PISCUNO and, lastly, CASIRA, the best pottery town of Jujuy, where we will visit the potter’s houses and see the process of the products they manufacture. We will start our return to LA QUIACA passing through CIENEGUILLAS, where we will have lunch and then visit YAVI, the church, the museum Casa Hacienda del Marques de Tojo, and Yavi Chico. We will take Route 9 and return to Quebrada.
NOTE: THIS TRIP CAN LAST 6 DAYS IF WE ADD THE VISIT TO THE “LAGUNA DE VILAMA”
